Tips for Installing New Door Hardware

April 27, 2022

From time to time, you may have to replace your worn-out door hardware and install new sets. You should know that installing new door hardware is a pretty straightforward process. Before you start to DIY install new door hardware, you should familiarize yourself with its components. A typical cylindrical interior door hardware comprises a latch assembly, a handle or knob connected to the cylinder, a faceplate, and a second handle or knob.

Additionally, you will need a few tools for the installation like:

  • Chisel
  • Hammer
  • Cordless drill
  • Pencil
  • Utility knife
  • Screwdriver

Here’s a step-by-step expert guide on how to install door hardware.

Step 1: Install the Latch Assembly

First, you might have to choose between using a round drive-in faceplate or a flat rectangular faceplate. It’s likely that your door already has space created to accommodate a certain plate. If your door doesn’t have the faceplate space already created, you will need to create one yourself using the chisel and hammer. Start by tracing the outline of the faceplate on the door over the cross bore with a pencil. Use the utility knife to score the outline to prevent the wood from splintering. Chisel the wood inside the traced area until the faceplate sits flush. Once done, install the latch assembly and ensure it’s facing the jamb. This would allow the jamb to effortlessly push back the latch when you close the door without turning the handle. After the latch is in place, hold on to screwing in the faceplate until the handles are installed.

Step 2: Install the Handles

Install a new door knob by sliding it and the attached cylinder into its respective borehole. Make that it lines up with the shafts on the latch assembly for it to function properly. After setting up the first handle, install the second handle to complete the connection. Secure the handles by fastening the two screws found on the "locking" side of the door. If the handles don’t fit into the borehole, you can enlarge the hole using a drill before installing them.

Step 3: Install the Deadbolt

If your door hardware comes with a deadbolt, this is the time to install it. You need to repeat that same procedure that you have undertaken so far. If your door doesn’t already have one, you can use the drill to create a new hole for the deadbolt.

Step 4: Fasten the Face Place

Now that all of the door hardware is in place, test it to ensure it’s working as expected. If it is, you should tighten the screws in the faceplate using a screwdriver. Tighten the screws to stilt flush on the faceplate.
